When her neighbor Chester Lampi is shot and killed in his hunting blind, sixty-six-year-old widow Gertie Johnson seizes the opportunity to become a detective. Gertie is abetted (and hindered) in her investigation by her grandson Little Donny, man-hungry best friend Cora Mae, and volunteer bodyguard Kitty. It doesn’t help that Chester’s death has been ruled an accident by the sheriff of this backwoods community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Or that Sheriff Blaze Johnson happens to be Gertie’s son.

No, Deb is not suffering from split personality disorder. Although she now has a pen name. As Hannah Reed, she is smarter, more talented, and much younger. Okay, maybe she does have the disorder. But she can't deny that, as Hannah, she has a new series launching in September. Buzz Off is the official title. Visit her website, filled with fun facts about honeybees and honey.

Did you know:

Honey isn't only for eating!

Honey-Kissed Lip Balm

  • 1 cup sweet almond oil
  • 1/2 cup beeswax**
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
Place almond oil and beeswax in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute or until mixture melts. Whisk honey into beeswax mixture; stir well. Set aside to cool completely. When cool, pour into small containers with lids. *Sweet almond oil can be found at natural food stores. ** Beeswax can be purchased at craft and beekeeping stores.

Okay, if you insist!

Honey Strawberry Tea Cooler

Makes 4 servings
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, stemmed and cleaned
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 can (6 oz.) frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 2 cups brewed green tea, cooled
In a blender or food processor container, combine strawberries and honey; process until smooth. Add orange juice concentrate; process until well blended. Stir into cooled tea. Serve over ice.

Murder Passes the Buck, the first in Deb's Gertie Johnson Backwoods Adventure series, is back in print with a cool new cover designed by Patty G. Henderson! And Buzz Off, A Queen Bee Mystery, is off to her editor.

Ideas for Fall:

September is National Honey Month

The honey recipes submitted were wonderful. Those chosen for the first mystery in the beekeeping series were from Heidi Cox, Mary Helen Becker, Jack Quick, and Jessica Stapp. Thanks to all who participated! And remember to buy honey produced in your area to combat seasonal allergies.

Seeds for Thought

Speaking of seeds - save your vegetable and flower seeds to exchange with friends next year.

Plant garlic cloves for a crop next summer. Did you know the heads grow underground? Bees love their pink flowers.

Make a  Difference

Do you know someone who is lonely or sad? Surprise them with a bouquet of wild flowers and grasses. They grow in abundance along the sides of the roads.  Or buy them at your local farmers market.

End of summer songs:

Autumn Leaves (various), September (Earth, Wind, Fire), Night Moves (Bob Seger), Sealed with a Kiss (Brian Hyland), See You in September (The Happenings)

Have a Great Fall!
